SharKNX can program a KNX individual address into a device straight from your phone, tablet, or PC - no ETS and no laptop needed on site. You can do it three ways: from your ETS project, from a line scan by pressing the device's programming button, or by serial number without touching the device at all.

Before you start
- Connect to a KNX gateway - see Connect to a Gateway.
- Know which address the device should get. With an ETS project loaded, SharKNX takes it from the project.
- A new device out of the box usually has the address
15.15.255.
Method A - From your ETS project (recommended)
The fastest way to commission a device that is in your project: SharKNX already knows which address it should have.
- Load your ETS project - see Load an ETS Project.
- On the Project page, find the device in the Devices, Topology, or Buildings tab and tap it.
- In the device sheet, tap Program Address.
- When SharKNX shows Press prog button on device, press the programming button on the physical device. You have 30 seconds.
- SharKNX writes the project's address to the device, confirms it, and restarts the device so it leaves programming mode. The sheet shows Programmed.
Tip: filter the Devices tab by ETS download status to list only the devices whose individual address has not been downloaded yet - your commissioning to-do list. See ETS Projects in SharKNX.
Method B - With the programming button, from a line scan
Use this to change the address of a device you found on the bus, with or without a project.
- Open Tools → Line Scan and scan the line - see Scan a Bus Line.
- Tap the device card to open its sheet, then tap Program Address.
- Enter the New Address to Write.
- Tap Program via Prog Button.
- When prompted, press the programming button on the device within the 30-second countdown.
- SharKNX writes the address, confirms it, and restarts the device to take it out of programming mode.
Method C - By serial number, without touching the device
Every KNX device has a unique serial number, and SharKNX can use it to program the address - no button press needed. Ideal for devices that are hard to reach, such as actuators above a ceiling or in a locked cabinet.
- In Tools → Line Scan, open the device and tap Read Info first, so SharKNX knows its serial number. Without it, the option shows No serial number - read device info first.
- Tap Program Address and enter the New Address to Write.
- Tap Program via Serial No.. SharKNX addresses the device by its serial number and writes the new address.
The serial-number method does not restart the device.
How SharKNX keeps programming safe
SharKNX follows the KNX standard's address programming procedure:
- One device at a time. If more than one device is in programming mode, SharKNX does not write - otherwise the wrong device could get the address. Take the others out of programming mode first.
- Occupied addresses are respected. If another device already uses the new address, SharKNX stops instead of creating a duplicate.
- Every write is read back. SharKNX only reports success once the device answers at its new address. If it cannot confirm, you see Address written, but not confirmed - re-scan to verify.
- Programming mode is switched off by restarting the device after a successful write. If that restart fails, SharKNX tells you, and the address is still set - just take the device out of programming mode by hand.
Tip - Button out of reach, serial number unknown
If you know the device's current address but cannot press its button, switch programming mode on remotely: open Tools → Devices, enter the current address, and tap Prog. Mode to switch programming mode on. Then start Program via Prog Button (Method B) - SharKNX finds the device already in programming mode.
After programming
- Tap Check Presence in the device sheet, or Check on the Tools → Devices tab, to confirm the device answers at its new address.
- Once every device has its address, download the application programs and parameters from ETS. SharKNX sets individual addresses only; application download stays in ETS.
